Video of Cuban Blogger Yoani Sanchez’s Interview With “Oslo Freedom Forum 2010”

The blogger and Cuban philologist Yoani Sanchez speaks of how she started her blog Generación Y, why it is difficult to silence a blogger, and why the blog continues despite threats by the Cuban government. She explains that her blog is not proof that there is freedom of expression in Cuba, it is more a “proof of citizen daring in a framework of non-freedom in a framework of technological infrastructure”; she has even been able to project her voice outside the country. She explains how the death of Orlando Zapata has catalyzed the unity and outrage against the Cuban government, which has recently lost its mask, before the international community, of being a country that respected freedom and human rights. Yoani wants the world to understand that Cubans “are not circus animals, right? We settle for elementary education and perhaps a little food. We want more. We want freedom. We need to express ourselves and for that international solidarity is important. Do not abandon us, do not leave us alone, because alone we can’t do it.”
