Cuban Cardinal Jaime Ortega: Difficult Situation


The Cuban church has greatly delayed speaking out about the Ladies in White and the Opposition in Cuba.

The archbishop of Havana, Jaime Ortega, affirmed that Cuba faces a “very difficult” situation, that the church, “has done everything historically possible,” for the political prisoners to be freed and for the necessary dialog with the United States.

In an interview in the digital edition of the magazine New Word, Cardinal Ortega spoke about these and other issued of the Cuban reality such as the acts of repudiation against the Ladies in White, families of dissidents imprisoned since 2003, or the huger strike of dissident Guillermo Fariñas.

With respec tto the political prisoners, the archbishop affirmed that “the church has done everything historically possible for their freedom, not just for those who are sick but the others as well.”
