Partial Collapse in Vedado

A partial collapse of a two-story building on Zapata Street between A and B, Vedado, occurred last Monday night. The fall of the building, converted into a solar, or tenement, some years ago, did not injure or kill anyone.

Dozens of victims, including children, found themselves sleeping in the public street.

Bureaucrats from the popular Power Housing Institute went to the site to tell the residents they could be taken to shelters, which caused a collective protest, “as everyone knows once you enter a shelter you never leave.”

“The government has been deceiving us since 1978 with the promise of moving from here, but not to shelters rather to other buildings, because in its state this building couldn’t stand much longer, it endured too much,” said one of the victims who did not want to be identified.
