The Language Conference will offer the most complete x-ray of the Spanish language

Madrid, Feb 18.- More than 200 experts will offer in Chile the most complete x-ray of the status of the Spanish language in the 5th International Conference on the Language, which will take place on March 2-5 in Valparaiso and which for the first time will celebrate poetry and, in particular, Pablo Neruda and Gabriela Mistral, according to the official program made public today by the Royal Academy.

With a markedly American character, the Conference will be inaugurated on March 2 by the King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía of Spain, and the Chilean President, Michelle Bachelet. This will be the first activity with which the bicentennial of the Hispanoamerican republics’ independence will be celebrated.

This great cultural event will gather writers like Mario Vargas Llosa, Jorge Edwards, Antonio Skármeta, Juan Gelman and Nélida Piñón, as well as former presidents Ricardo Lagos (Chile), Belisario Betancourt (Colombia), Osvaldo Hurtado (Ecuador), Julio María Sanguinetti (Uruguay), Ernesto Zedillo (Mexico) and Felipe González (Spain), among many other presenters.

The twenty-two Academies of the Language bring important new developments to the Conference, such as the “Diccionario de americanismos”, (Dictionary of Americanism), a monumental work of 2,500 edited in one volume, or like the two volumes of the “Nueva gramática de la lengua española”, both of them recently published, and its totally new “Manual” version, which in approximately 700 pages will provide an approach to the content of the official Grammar  for the public at large.

According to today’s note informing The Real Spanish academy and the Cervantes’ Institute, organizers of the Conference together with the Association of the Academy of the National Council of Culture and the Arts in Chile, the academic experts will make known the advances of the new orthography that these institutions prepare

oetry will be the protagonist in many of the acts in this great cultural gathering, in which Neruda and Nistral will be honored, awarded with the Literature Nobel Prize, and the commemorative popular editions will be presented to both authors prepared by The RAE and the Academy Association. Neruda’s will have some unpublished material.

There will be a second tribute dedicated to Andrés Bello global projection teacher for all Spanish language culture. A tribute to the Hispanic American contemporary poetry and the [presentation of the anthology of the Hispanic-American of the Cervantes’ institute, they will honor in a special way the poets from Chile, it is indicated in the note.

In the tribute to the poetry of Latin America the greatest representatives of the lyric in Spanish will participate, as Argentine Juan Gelman, the Peruvian Hermann Belli, Francisco Brines the Spanish, Mexican and Chilean Eduardo Lizalde Nicanor Parra.

The Valparaiso Congress will continue the work of that developed in Zacatecas (México, 1997), Valladolid (España, 2001), Rosario (Argentina, 2004) y Cartagena de Indias (Colombia, 2007).

Meeting under the theme of “America in the Spanish language,” more than 200 speakers from all the Latin American countries, as well as other nations, will analyze the current situation of Spanish.

It is expected that 1,300 people, among them numerous Chilean professors and university students will attend the Congress, at the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María.

In addition to the writers already mentioned, there will be Laura Esquivel, Sergio Ramírez, Luis Mateo Díez, José María Merino, Óscar Hahn, Gonzalo Celorio, Jorge Volpi and Vicente Luis Mora, as well as the philosophers Emilio Lledó, Juan José Sebreli and Santiago Kovadloff.

Linguists and philologist will be represented by, among others, Genoveva Iriarte (Colombia), Elena Rojas y Elvira Narvaja de Arnoux (Argentina), Rodolfo Cerrón-Palomino (Perú), José Antonio Pascual, Ignacio Bosque, Darío Villanueva, José Manuel Blecua y Salvador Gutiérrez Ordóñez (España), Marianne Peronard (Chile) and Carmen Silva-Corvalán (Chile-EE.UU.).

In this cultural event that delves into Spanish from various angles, other attendees are Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchú, Professor and former Foreign Minister Jorge Castaneda of Mexico, journalists Alex Grijelmo, Juan Luis Cebrian, Rafael Roncagliolo and Julio Villanueva Chang, also  Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez and Emilio Botin and entrepreneurs and scientists Cesar Alierta Ricardo Bressani, José Manuel Sánchez Ron, Pedro Garcia Barreno.

The Cervantes Institute will present its new projects in language technology, the International Certification System of Language Proficiency in Spanish and works “Learning to read” and “Body plural” as well as the aforementioned “Anthology of Latin American poetry today” conducted by Professor Gustavo Guerrero.

Meanwhile, the National Council for Culture and Arts of Chile will address the challenges in the field of books and reading.
